Jenna Ortega Says She Would Go “All Day” Without Eating or Drinking on Set as a Child Star
Jenna Ortega is detailing the more difficult parts of child stardom.
Although the Wednesday star was a quick learner as she began her career in the early 2010s, noting she couldn’t recall “one mistake” she made while starting out, she admitted that her success was partially due to her attempts to not be a nuisance.
“As a child, I was so grateful and so excited to be there that my game face was on,” Ortega told Esquire in an interview published Aug. 11. “I wasn’t asking for a sip of water. I would go all day without eating, drinking, whatever, because I wanted so badly to not be in the way of anybody.”
Now, in hindsight, the 23-year-old recognizes, “Maybe that was my mistake, was not actually looking after myself.”
Still, Ortega—whose first jobs included roles in Iron Man 3, Days of Our Lives and CSI: NY—has been focused on her goal to become an actor for as long as she can remember.
“I was 7 years old when I said I wanted to do this,” she continued. “My parents laughed at me when I told them that I wanted to do it, and then that was kind of the root of everything. The motivation. And I never really stopped, because I’m very stubborn. And then I never questioned it.”
As for how the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice actress discovered she wanted to lean into the dark arts of onscreen magic? It was fellow child star Dakota Fanning who inspired her.

“As a young girl, to see a young girl with so much, it felt like wisdom, like she had lived and walked this planet many times before,” Ortega noted. “She kind of taught me what an actor even was when I was a kid.”

Few 6-year-olds have made splashier movie debuts than Lipnicki, who went toe-to-toe with Tom Cruisein the charm department inJerry Maguire and got almost as many memorable lines. He started having nightly panic attacks, anticipating the next day’s humiliation. Yet he had survived, adding, “I am grateful for the amazing life I have and I hope I can pass on that it DOES get better.”
He’s still in showbiz as an adult, starring in the 2023 Lifetime movie Secrets at the Museum. The L.A. native is also a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and in May 2021 he volunteered to provide additional security outside a mid-city synagogue amid a rise in anti-Semitic vandalism and harassment.
